A CBRC Featured Single Origin
Organic Umoja is a USDA Certified Organic coffee from Africa's Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The name of this coffee, Umoja, means “Solidarity” in Swahili. The high altitude, climate and volcanic soil found in Africa’s Great Lakes region provides the perfect environment for growing coffee. Umoja beans are grown between Lake Kivu and the Mitumba Mountain range, at altitudes over 5,900 ft. It is medium roasted and offers a full-bodied cup, featuring sweet notes of lemon and orange with dark chocolate.
We sourced Umoja through Mighty Peace Coffee, whose mission is to provide coffee connoisseurs, specialty enthusiasts & ethical businesses with the highest quality coffee, while sharing the stories of Congolese friends & partners to inspire, educate, and end poverty, injustice, and conflict worldwide.
Their values are based on the three pillars of "Peace Trade":

Mighty Peace works with a Congolese cooperative that consists of 11,600 members, mostly small farmers, for whom coffee is a vital and often sole source of income & stability. Umoja coffee supports 1,050 specialty farmers and 600 leaders within the cooperative. In the 10 years the farmers have been growing specialty coffee cooperatively, the sale of Umoja has helped to improve the living conditions of its members; providing schooling, housing, jobs, and reducing coffee smuggling on Lake Kivu.
CBRC supports this effort to improve livelihood security, transparent trade and environmental responsibility, especially in these communities that have been historically made vulnerable by violence and armed conflict.
We originally chose Umoja to be our 2020 limited edition summer seasonal can, but because we enjoyed the coffee so much and wanted to keep supporting the efforts of Mighty Peace, we received a second shipment to continue selling it through the fall.
